Speedo problem

The problem I’ve been having with the speedo is that it winds itself off the clock before I’m even out of first gear.  I pulled the speedo cable and speedo driven gear out and checked them.  The nylon speedo driven gear looks fine to me.  The cable on the other hand is looking worse for wear so I’ve ordered an entirely new cable rather than just get an inner cable made up.

I then pulled out the instrument cluster, the back of which was covered in transmission fluid near where the speedo cable connects….. a clue?  I think so.

I took the cluster to Premier Instruments in Dickson and they overhauled the cluster and found that the transmission fluid had eaten through a bunch of rubber seals and was playing havoc with the speedo.

Cluster is reinstalled, just waiting on the speedo cable.   I suppose I should clean out the garage too so I have a bit more room to move.

I have just purchased a 1978 KE35 Corolla, in pretty original condition. Apart from a 4K, the car is standard down to the radio and cassette player and has all the original stickers relating to tyre size and tuning information.

I just need to fix the speedo to get the car registered.

Anyway, photos below.
