3 column layout problem explained
This post is an addition to the post I made a few days ago about the 3 column layout problem that I sort of found a workaround for in regards to floating three columns whilst having two columns with fixed widths blah blah blah. I just read a post on Eric?s blog and he links to an article by Alex Robinson. The article, One True Layout kind of explains the issue I was experiencing in regards to floating content that physically appears above another chunk of content in the HTML.
To quote Alex:
?This method runs head first into a peculiarity in the layout engine of IE Win (5 and 6) - if block 1 is not the first column, it requires its margin-left to be divided by 2.
Investigating further, we find that the bug is triggered for any block n (where n is the position of the block within the source code) if:
1. column positions 1 to n-1 are occupied by blocks 1 to n-1 (in any order)
2. block n occupies column position 2n or greater?
It probably looks confusing but I had one of those ?Ahh? moments where everything kind of clicked into place and I realised why I was having problems. Alex’s solution makes quite a lot fo sense in regards to floating divs and I think the most helpful part of the article was explaining how to work around IE’s rendering problem.
